I'd been working on this pattern for some time using paint sketches (painting different ideas on to paper). I think this work is also an evolution from my other painting Funk Y. Although, this painting doesn't stem from music. I like the colours it created and wondered if this pattern could be repeated, so I set out to find out.
I began with a 3 colour palette, repeating the brush pattern across the canvas, as one layer. The next colour became the next layer and so on. The pattern was determined by the relation to the other shapes and whether it felt right. It took some time to get the combination of colour looking good, as I tried with a monochrome palette (just using tones of one colour) however it didn't have the punch or contrast I was looking for.
Due to the transparent nature of the paint, the last layer of colour can be seen through the new one. This creates a build up of different colours when they over lap. For example, it looks like there is black used, but there isn't, that is just painted layers creating the effect.
The result is something really interesting. I like the multilayed pattern and it standout as something I could use in the future. I thought that I would name the painting Clarity as it was a funny contrasting title because the patterning is quite complex.
