"Tulip No 8" is part of a series focusing on flowers using expressive brush strokes and bold colours.
Tulips for me are the marker for the beginning of spring. Their striking forms and almost rubbery look, make them attractive to have in the garden. I wanted to capture the energy of this spring feeling. I did this by firstly painting the background a strong red/pink. I used a minimal colour palette to put expressive strokes onto the canvas. Using a wet on wet approach to painting, it allowed me to merge some of the colours while painting. This gave me some of the secondary colours. By reducing the colour palette, this made it more restrictive meaning I had to be more confident with my choice of line making. Getting the strokes in the right place to have the desired stylistic result.
